Furukawa Art Museum Collection Exhibition
“Two Gazes — Japanese-Style Painting and Western-Style Painting”
From the Meiji era through the Shōwa and into the Heisei period, painters who lived through turbulent times entrusted their thoughts to their brushes, depicting the ever‑changing society and the people within it. This exhibition, centered on the collection of Furukawa Tamezaburō, presents masterpieces from the Furukawa Art Museum by artists who led the worlds of modern Japanese-style painting and Western-style painting.
With five thematic sections, the exhibition unravels the diverse beauty and expressive approaches seen through the “gaze” of painters who pursued different artistic paths—Nihonga and Western painting.
From the realm of Japanese-style painting, the exhibition features works by Yokoyama Taikan, Takeuchi Seiho, Uemura Shōen, Itō Shōha, and others who inherited tradition while seeking new challenges. From the Western-style painters, it introduces works by Wada Eisaku, Fujita Tsuguharu, Ebihara Kinosuke, Tōgō Seiji, Kito Nabesaburō, Itō Kiyonaga, and more—artists who depicted a wide range of styles from realism to introspective expression.
Different techniques, different sensibilities—yet what flows through them all is the shared gaze of artists who lived in the same era. The people, landscapes, seasons, and the very atmosphere of their time, each captured in their own way, continue to speak to our hearts even today.
Please enjoy to your heart’s content the beauty and memories woven by their brushes.
Special Exhibition at the Tamezaburō Memorial Museum
“The World of Folding Screens Experienced in a Traditional Sukiya‑Style Japanese Room”
In Japanese living spaces, paintings have never been merely objects for viewing; they have shaped the atmosphere of a room and carried with them the seasons and stories of daily life. Among them, folding screens (byōbu) uniquely combine the beauty of painting with the practical function of dividing space. They guide the viewer’s gaze, create a sense of presence, and bring landscapes to life within the home.
In this exhibition, through the scenes created by folding screens and hanging scrolls, visitors are invited to experience the spatial aesthetics of the Tamezaburō Memorial Museum’s sukiya‑style architecture. By sensing the flow of gaze, season, and narrative, we hope you will quietly and deeply appreciate the essence of Japanese beauty that emerges from the harmony between art and space.
