Furukawa Museum Collection Exhibition “The Genealogy of Bijin-ga: Images of Graceful Women”
Since ancient times, the human figure has been represented in many different ways. Female figures, in particular, have reflected the ideals and aesthetic sensibilities of each era.
To explore bijin-ga is also to sense the atmosphere of the times in which these women were depicted.
Under the theme “Images of Graceful Women,” this exhibition introduces the genealogy and development of modern bijin-ga through works from the Furukawa Museum collection.
After the Meiji period, bijin-ga became established amid the artistic rivalry between the Kyoto and Tokyo art circles, developing around two great masters: Uemura Shōen in Kyoto and Kaburaki Kiyokata in Tokyo.
Through works by artists connected to these two lineages, the exhibition highlights the differences and appeal of artistic expression in eastern and western Japan.
We also invite visitors to enjoy the diverse depictions of “graceful women,” including works portraying women from Chinese and Japanese history as well as maiko who bring color to the four seasons.
Please enjoy the genealogy of modern bijin-ga and the rich breadth of its expression.

Six ceramic artists who have engaged deeply with the clay of Mino and boldly explored its possibilities—Keiji Ito, Hiromi Itabashi, Kentaro Kawabata, Akishi Shinji, Takuro Kuwata, and Keita Matsunaga—will present their works in the traditional Japanese house of the Tamezaburo Memorial Museum. At the center of this exhibition stands Keiji Ito, who has built a unique world of forms akin to prayer, traversing the realms of ceramics, painting, and contemporary art, and who continues to exert a profound influence on younger generations. Ito served as an instructor at the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center (hereafter “the Design Center”), an institution known for producing many artists, from around 1970 until 2000. This exhibition brings together artists who studied under Ito at the Design Center, as well as those who, inspired by their time there, chose Mino as their base of production and have been shaped by Ito’s guidance.
The six exhibiting artists—collectively “Ceramic Six”—are contemporary ceramicists who each pursue independent artistic practices. They have participated in numerous group and curated exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, developing entirely distinct modes of expression and expanding the boundaries of traditional ceramics.
Hiromi Itabashi, who studied directly under Ito, explores the “spaces” that dwell within vessels through the quiet presence of clay and serene forms. Kentaro Kawabata creates dynamic works in which molten glass flows into organic hand-built porcelain forms. Akishi Shinji reexamines the very essence of ceramics through his investigations into translucent white porcelain. Takuro Kuwata boldly fuses tradition and pop aesthetics, producing striking works that challenge the conventions of ceramics. Keita Matsunaga incorporates material transformation and chance, giving rise to forms that evoke the vitality of clay itself. Each artist transcends the boundaries of contemporary art and craft, forging innovative worlds of expression.
The venue, the Tamezaburo Memorial Museum (a branch of the Furukawa Art Museum and formerly the residence of Tamezaburo Furukawa), is a sukiya-style house built in 1934. While preserving tradition, it has long sought to foster new artistic culture. Having aged alongside Keiji Ito, now ninety years old, the museum provides a fitting setting in which to present six artists who share the same alma mater and who continue to reinterpret and renew “Mino” through their own sensibilities and methods. Through a space where diverse expressions resonate—tradition and innovation, stillness and dynamism, reverence for materials and bold experimentation—this exhibition invites you to experience a new horizon in contemporary ceramics.
