Exhibition Concept
This exhibition brings together the artistic achievements of Shinsuke Yamamoto—an eminent sculptor and member of the Japan Art Academy who has long shaped the field of Japanese figurative sculpture—and Sumie Yamamoto, a Western-style painter celebrated for her luminous depictions of flora. Their creative trajectories are presented through a selection of works, including several shown for the first time.
On the first floor of the Furukawa Art Museum, “Shinsuke Yamamoto — Hymn to Humanity: In Prayer for Peace” explores the profound spiritual sensibility that permeates the artist’s oeuvre. His sculpted female figures, rendered with crystalline clarity, stand in quiet poise, embodying prayers born of life, nature, and human encounter. Rooted in the sculptural spirit of Italy that inspired him in his youth, this section delves into the inner realm he pursued throughout his lifetime.
The second floor presents “Sumie Yamamoto — MY LANDSCAPE: Path of Prayer.” Her serene landscapes—woven from the rich hues of acrylic gouache and the subtle intricacy of pen drawing—evoke the vitality of blooming plants and the gentle pulse of ever-changing life. Painted without preliminary sketches, the works in her “Path of Prayer” series capture the immediacy of natural form and color, unfolding across the gallery in quietly resonant scenes.
At the Annex Tamezaburō Memorial Museum, works by Shinsuke and Sumie are exhibited alongside Japanese paintings by their daughter, Maki Yamamoto, whose delicate brushwork brings seasonal flowers to life. Together, the three artists offer a compelling harmony of expression—an intergenerational lineage of beauty within the Yamamoto family.
